The housing crisis didn't start this year, it's been a slow buildup of different factors that led to the mess that we're in now. There are solutions, and the faster we act the better life will be in the future.
Beautiful mixed income housing should be built with investment from the county. Non-market housing is the best step to affordable housing. But our first step is to help the many people who qualify for low income housing get into a place that will give them more money in their pocket.
The county has the ability to create certificates of participation, a type of equity that can be used to fund county owned affordable housing. This will get money to build housing with out the pressure of the tax payer footing the bill. (imagine you own a house and you use equity to build something to rent out to pay back the loan, it works the same)
Using these funds we partner with several non-profit organizations, and along with match grants, we begin construction on affordable housing. The renters will pay off the cost of the housing, with affordability increasing as time goes on, again this would happen with very little impact on local tax payers.
Creating a place for families to stay that will allow them a safe space to begin moving into permanent housing is a top priority. There are also limits on camping in the county that need to be removed while we are in this housing crisis.
Studies show that housing reduces crime, healthcare costs, and greenhouse gas emissions! While increasing economic activity, job creation, and tax generation.
One of the biggest problems in the county is finding qualified workers, building affordable housing keeps graduates local and gives them opportunities to increase their wealth and begin building the local economy.
Non-Market housing has been used all over the world to help generate long term housing solutions to the problems all of us face.
A template that the world is trying to follow, a deep dive into how affordable housing can be a sustainable way for governments to provide low-cost housing that benefits everyone.
